Court Sentence Landlord to Life Imprisonment For Defiling Tenant’s Underage Children

Court Sentence Landlord to Life Imprisonment For Defiling Tenant’s Underage Children

A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced Igwe Ambrose, a 65-year-old landlord, to life imprisonment for defiling his tenant’s children.

Ambrose was found guilty of inserting his fingers into the private parts of his tenant’s children.

He was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child.

The survivors are aged 7 and 11.

The court said the landlord committed the offences at Shagari Estate, Ipaja, between January and June 2021.

In her verdict, Abiola Soladoye, the judge, said the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. Soladoye said the survivors identified the defendant and the evidence exposed him as a “bare-faced liar”.

The judge described the landlord as a “dirty old man” who fingered and touched the breasts of the survivors on the pretext of helping them with their school assignments.

“The testimonies of the prosecution witnesses (survivors) were credible, as they cannot consent to being fingered by the landlord,” the judge ruled.

“The defendant was identified as the assailant and their evidences were corroborated by their mother and the investigating police officer (IPO) who visited the crime scene and a clear account of the assault and indecent treatment was confirmed.”

The judge sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment for count one and count two each; while counts three and four carried seven years jail term each.

“Counts one and two carry life imprisonment each; the defendant is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment on each of the count charge,” Soladoye added.

“In respect to counts three and four which carry seven years jail term, the defendant is hereby sentenced to seven years imprisonment on each of the count charge.

“His name is to be entered in the sexual offences register maintained by Lagos State Government,” the judge said.

The Lagos State Domestic & Sexual Violence Agency reiterated the State’s Zero tolerance stance and insists that there is help for survivors even as it remains committed to ensuring perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

Why Fuel Price May Fall This Week as Petrol Vessels Berth - NNPCL

Why Fuel Price May Fall This Week as Petrol Vessels Berth - NNPCL

The potential for a reduction in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, is looming in filling stations run by independent marketers this week.

Oil dealers revealed on Saturday that this anticipated decrease is a result of significant imports of PMS by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The recent surge in petrol prices at retail outlets operated by independent marketers was attributed to a shortage of the commodity, leading to profit-driven practices by both depot owners and filling stations. This situation prompted concerns about escalating costs for consumers.

However, operators in the downstream oil sector confirmed on Saturday night that numerous cargoes imported by NNPCL had reached Nigeria. Currently, some of these cargoes are actively discharging at the ports, offering a ray of hope for increased availability and potentially mitigating the pricing challenges faced by consumers.

“Once the products start hitting filling stations, fuel price will reduce, because the recent high cost was due to supply drop,” the National Public Relations Officer, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chief Ukadike Chinedu, told our correspondent.

On Thursday, oil marketers blamed the emergence of queues for petrol at filling stations in Abuja and neighbouring Nasarawa and Niger states on the low supply of PMS by its sole importer – NNPCL.

However, the national oil company refuted the position of marketers, as it argued that the queues in the affected areas were due to a “price war.”

But going by the latest development concerning the imports by NNPCL, operators in the sector stated that the queues would not only disappear but there would be a reduction in price at independent filling stations.

Currently, petrol is mostly sold at between N580 and N613/litre at filling stations operated by NNPCL. Most other marketers dispense the commodity at higher rates, with some selling PMS for as high as N670/litre.

“The most important thing now is that cargoes carrying PMS ordered by NNPCL have arrived, some of them have berthed and they are discharging. So the partial scarcity we are experiencing now will be gone,” Ukadike said.

He noted that the inflow of foreign exchange during the Yuletide would not necessarily impact petrol prices, rather the increased imports by NNPCL should warrant a reduction in price.

He said the large PMS imports were confirmed to marketers by NNPCL.

On whether marketers had started receiving the products, Ukadike replied, “By Monday we will start receiving from Port Harcourt and Warri, based on my last discussion with the NNPC management.”

Another major marketer also confirmed the position of IPMAN, as he stated that “when you wet the market with products, there’ll be no room for profiteering.”

The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, refuted claims made by oil marketers about the reappearance of fuel queues. He asserted that their position was inaccurate and emphasized that the oil company had an ample supply of products.

“That is not true. The recent tightness in Abuja is essentially a price war which is typical of any competitive market. Motorists would rather queue at filling stations that offer lower prices than others.

“While NNPC retail is selling at N613/litre in Abuja, other marketers’ prices range from N625-N650/litre,” Soneye said.

NEKE OKA RENAISSANCE

NEKE OKA RENAISSANCE

This project will define the age long strength of Neke people with regard to IGWE BU IKE ( unity is strength). We shall know whether the Neke we have today is still the same proactive Neke our forebears bequeathed to us.

The success or otherwise of this project will speak volumes of the acclaimed Neke people's survival instinct which Neke was known for. It will affirm or place doubt on the popular saying, Neke oka.

Undoubtedly, Neke is badly in need of a functional health facility having been denied one for so long. No Neke person will deny this fact as it has become a common knowledge that we are the only community in Isi-Uzo today without a functional health facility. It is not hidden in any way because the negative effects on the well-being of our people are not farfetched.

Neke used to be respected and feared in the old Isi-Uzo when our fathers held sway and achieved so many community developments. Neke Girls now known as CSS Neke was built by our fathers through community efforts. The two major churches in Neke today, St Stephen's Anglican Church and St Patrick's Catholic Church were all built by community efforts through their respective members.

Neke never lacked unity of purpose and I believe it will not start in our own time. Yes it will not start now as we have the capacity to keep the candle burning. To buttress this, it will interest us to know that the relative security and peace we're enjoying in Neke today are functions of our unity and sincerity of purpose laced in our firm believe in the principle of IGWE BU IKE.

While contributing to the success of this project, I want us to acknowledge the fact that we're bound by our common destiny as Neke people. The health care facility even if it does not benefit us directly, will benefit our family members in one way or the other.

I therefore respectfully make a passionate appeal to all of us to contribute our individual quotas towards realising this tall dream. Posterity will forever remember us for heeding this clarion call of community development.

God bless Neke

NDF:ONYE AYALE NWANNEYE

ONYE AYALE NWANNEYE

This is to invite all the sons and daughters of Igbo Nsukka to the launching of an ultramodern medical centre in Neke on the 30th December, 2023 at Ikem Road, by Nkwo Neke.

As the voice note has rightly stated, Isi-Uzo does not have enough ultramodern medical facilities to cater for the health needs of the entire Isi-Uzo people. The medical centre if actualized will augment the few existing ones which cannot meet up with the high demand of medical services in Isi-Uzo.

I therefore enjoin ukwu n' ibe of Isi-Uzo people and Neke in particular to consider the content of the background music which clearly states the need for us to be our brothers ' keepers with the lyrics of ONULU UBE NWANNE AGBANA OSO.

A modern hospital in Neke can be of immense benefit not only the people of Neke, but also to all other communities within and around Isi-Uzo local government area.

In view this undiluted fact, I appeal for brotherly support from all of you in this noble quest for a healthy society as we fervently pray that God Almighty rewards you richly.

CHRONICLE OF NEKE DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION'S ACTIVITIES

CHRONICLE OF NEKE DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION'S ACTIVITIES

Neke Development Foundation is an association of patriotic individuals of Neke extraction drawn from the five villages that make up Neke. The association, founded in the year 2020, is piloted by people of like minds who mostly reside in the western world where provision of social amenities is a norm hence, the burning desire in them to change the narrative of social development in Neke.

They have since the inception of the association promoted social welfare in Neke with a view to uplifting the community in all facets of development. It is an association of eminent sons and daughters of the land who feel the pains of rural dwellers of Neke with a determined vigour to make a difference.

During the covid economic crisis in 2020, the foundation galvanised Neke people from all walks of life and provided palliatives to our people at home. The programme was well coordinated and Neke once again re-enacted that IGWE BU IKE spirit to handle a pressing issue. The response was massive and legendary typical of Neke oka.

In 2021, the foundation conceived a laudable project of road sign installation at strategic points of Neke roads to curb road traffic accidents and serve as guides to visitors. The project was successfully executed and since then our people have been enjoying smooth rides.

Concerned about the unpleasant situation of Neke's voting strength, the foundation again sponsored the participation of our people in the voters registration exercise which took place in 2022 with the sum of one million naira. The foundation though not a political group, saw the need for Neke to be strategically positioned for greater political patronage in Enugu State by beefing up its voting strength.

In December 2022 also, the foundation provided another round of palliatives for the poor and less privileged Neke people mostly the elderly and young widows. They transversed the length and breath of Neke including our various Ndiagu settlements to distribute the palliatives to those who needed them. It was again another success story of NDF's promotion of the well-being of Neke people.

Relentlessly disturbed about the plight of Neke rural dwellers, the foundation sought to renovate and rehabilitate the only skeletal health facility in Neke the same year 2022 but was advised otherwise by some stakeholders who felt that construction of a new and full-fledged hospital will address the health needs of Neke better. The idea was that rather than spending millions of naira to rehabilitate a badly dilapidated facility, building a new ultramodern hospital will be far better and more deserving of a large community like Neke. That was the genesis of the current hospital project which has been in the front burner of NDF'S agenda.

From the above chronicle, it is very clear that NDF is a blessing to Ndi Neke and deserves the support of every Neke person in its efforts to reposition Neke with accelerated development. Let us also note that the foundation is not a property of anybody in particular or any group of individuals, but a forum of all patriotic Neke people irrespective of class or gender. It is therefore our duty to ensure the success of its developmental efforts in the overall interest of our community.

God bless Neke

Gov. Otti Commences Payment Of Judiciary Workers' 8-Year Salary Arrears

Gov. Otti Commences Payment Of Judiciary Workers' 8-Year Salary Arrears

Workers in the judicial service of Abia State are currently in a jubilant mood as the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, fulfills his promise of paying off their salary arrears said to be dating back to eight years.

The workers, who had been owed since January 2015, had embarked on an indefinite strike against the immediate past government in the state, to press home their demands, shortly before Governor Otti assumed office on May 29, 2023, chief press secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said in a statement.

They had demanded the confirmation of Justice Lilian Abai as the substantive Chief Judge of the state, after she had been on acting capacity for over six months. Also, they demanded the payment of the arrears of Consolidated Judiciary Staff Salary Structure, leave allowances, and judicial autonomy, the statement added.

However, out of the four demands, the previous administration was only able to grant one, the confirmation of the Chief Judge, and that was after the then Governor-elect, Dr. Otti, had declared that he would confirm Justice Abai, after being sworn-in as governor, the statement noted.

It continued, "The intervention of Governor Otti and promise to pay the outstanding salary arrears led to the calling off of the strike action by the workers, who associate under the aegis of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Abia State Chapter, in June 2023.

"In fulfillment of that promise, therefore, the Abia State Government has begun payment of the consolidated salary arrears of the members of JUSUN, who have since confirmed that they have started receiving the arrears owed them.

"Consequently, the workers through their union leader and Chairman, Oracle Chinedu Eze, have expressed their gratitude to the Governor and government of Abia State for fulfilling the promise of salary payments."

"It is with a grateful heart full of joy and happiness that I, on behalf of the entire Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria members and executives, wish to inform and appreciate you for the first batch of the CONJUSS arrears paid yesterday."

NLC: ASUU Declares Nationwide Strike

 NLC: ASUU Declares Nationwide Strike

The national body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed all its members nationwide to withdraw their service from Monday midnight till further notice.

The President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, gave the directive in a letter sent to all the union zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons of the union on Monday evening.

He said the directive was a reminder of the initial directive given by the leadership of both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for all workers nationwide to commence industrial action from Monday midnight.

He maintained that ASUU as an affiliate of NLC would have to honour the directive so as to jointly protect the interest of Nigerian workers.

“So, all the leadership of our union at zone and branch levels should immediately mobilise all members to participate in the industrial action as a people united cannot be defeated,” he said.

In another development, ASUU expressed strong dissatisfaction against what it described serious economic crisis Nigeria and its people are currently grappling with.

The ASUU boss said the state of the nation and the university system was extensively assessed at the two-day National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union at the Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna State that lasted on Sunday 12th, November 2023.

“The actor, who rode to national prominence in the 80s playing Samanja in the defunct NTA drama series (about the life of soldiers in the barracks), titled ‘Samanja’, reportedly passed on around midnight on Sunday.

“The last time I saw Samanja was in Lagos in 2019 when he was awarded the Fellowship of Theatre Arts (fta) by the Israel Eboh-led National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners.”

Some actors also took to the post’s comment section to pay tribute to the deceased.

This Is ‘Shameful And Unhealthy,’ Says Dino Melaye As He Calls For Cancellation of Kogi Governorship Election, Blasts INEC

This Is ‘Shameful And Unhealthy,’ Says Dino Melaye As He Calls For Cancellation of Kogi Governorship Election, Blasts INEC

The Peoples Democratic Party Candidate in the last Saturday Governorship election in Kogi State Senator Dino Melaye has called for total cancellation of the election following the massive rigging aided by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Melaye made this call at press conference in Lokoja on Sunday, condemning the conduct of Saturday’s election in Kogi State in totality.

Meyale described the exercise as shameful and unhealthy , regretting that INEC has not learnt any lesson to realise , ameliorate and palliate the problem they created to democratic process during the general elections in the country, still repeating the same in the governorship election.

“Yesterday in the five local governments of central senatorial districts in Kogi State, there was no election. In the end surprisingly, accreditation was done manually, the BVAS was not used.

“Prepared sheets manifested even before accreditation and evidence is all over media.

“INEC as matter of urgency must cancel the election. Many areas where I won, my agents were told there were no available result sheet to enter the result and we have evidence to back up this claims.

“As I speak to you, it is shameful that this is what our democracy has descended to.

“INEC has manifested ever than before, that they can not be trusted, they are biased, they are compromised and they can not be a neutral umpire.

“INEC officials, youth corps members were caught yesterday with prepared result sheets even before the commencement of the processes. A youth corps member was arrested with prepared result and N1 million.

“There was deliberate suppression my of my votes in Lokoja and Kogi local governments. This was deliberately done by governor Yahaya Bello and APC to make sure that even by their orchestrated arrangement, I don’t come second, because they do believe that there will be a a second ballot and they believe if there is a second ballot I have influence and tremendous support in the central and I can make an in road in the East.

“So they preferred any other person to come second,” Senator Melaye posited.
